Sushmita

Sushmita is a journalist, researcher, multimedia artist, and former engineer based in India. Her reporting has appeared in leading national and international publications such as The Caravan, The Wire, Firstpost, Down To Earth, Mid-Day, The New Indian Express, The Hindu Centre, The Third Pole, Mongabay, and others.

She reports on the issues that lie at the heart of climate, energy, society, culture, and people. Sushmita says she believes that it is important that the international narrative on climate change reflect the voices and experiences of Indigenous and marginalized communities.

In addition, she is interested in the intersections of culture and society.

Sushmita received a bachelor's in technology from Manipal University, Karnataka, India. She studied the arts while pursuing a master's at Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai.

She has written extensively on governance issues, covering important events such as the Muzaffarnagar riots, the Uttarakhand flood, the Lok Sabha elections in 2019, the Jharkhand elections in 2019, and the custodial torture of human rights defenders, mainly Adivasi, Dalit, and Muslim women.
